| Comments:The 2010 annual meeting of the Southern Fruit Fellowship took place at the SE Fruit and Tree Nut Laboratory, USDA, from late June 3- mid-day June 5. (Many thanks to the lab for hosting the group, along with local master gardeners and other interested individuals.) The meeting was kicked off with a fellowship at the motel at which members\' country wine, fruit, and preserves were shared. It closed with a field trip to two local packing sheds and a nursery. The main day--Friday, the 4th--was sandwiched between the two lighter days. . . . and what a day! After visits to the orchards, several presentations of special interest to me were made (viz., Dr. Conner [Coastal Plain Experiment Station] on muscadine cultivars and culture, Dr. Okie [Byron] on stone-fruit cultivar development, an ACES presentation on blueberries, and presentations by A.J. Bullard on fruits of the Moraceae and by Chris Inhulsen on minor fruits). Friday night was special. The Chris Inhulsen family opened their homestead in Montezuma for a tour of Chris\' plants (my!!!) and dinner. Many many thanks to Mrs. Inhulsen for welcoming us so warmly and working so hard (homemade peach pie, homemade bread, an -ade from Ichang \'lemon,\' BBQ, a cole salad . . .). How nice. After dinner, Ed Fackler, Chris Inhulsen and Ethan Natelson led a panel discussion. Supplemental A and B are full size images (~5 MB), taken at the tasting tables at the edge of the experimental plantings. |
