Comments:Billed as Maize-10 Maze, the field plot is part of an innovative outreach program for youth designed and put on by Hank Bass (Florida State) and Kome Onokpis (FAMU). Each of the 10 rows of corn represent one chromosome of maize and various mutants mapped to the respective chromosome are grown along the row. The field day is a special event and fortunately my BOT 3015 class has been able to attend. As one student put it this year, it "brings genetics alive." Rubbing shoulders is always good. Last year, I made a contact about the history of the D.T. Sutherland Foundry in Bainbridge (!!!) and one of my students, Amy (a portrait in images), started working in Hank's lab as a result of her participation in the field day. It has also been an opportunity for me to have some 8-ring-around corn (an heirloom milling corn) multiplied. :)

Supplemental Image A is an HTML page with several images embedded. The first and second rows show two examples of the mutants. In each, the first panel is an image of the placard. The third row comprises an overview of the field and the welcome tent. Other images are candid photos of students and others examining the mutants.
